Yahoo's closure of Geocities marks an admission that the death of the personal website may well be here. While in the 90's the netizen, itself a phrase of another internet era, who wanted to express him or herself, throw some art or thoughts or family photos out there, would naturally turn to a personal website. Today he or she is far more likely to use a blog or Facebook or Flickr or DeviantArt or MySpace or some combination of all the above. Social networking sites have helped drive the personal website to extinction, leaving it as the domain of the grey side of the web. And that is a shame because once upon a time everyone could be their own webmaster, today we are nothing more than cogs in a social networking machine.
