While movies often make alcohol and drug addiction seem like just another dramatic tool, behind the fiction depictions is a darkness. Darkness. A great abiding darkness. That is what addiction is for so many people who find themselves trapped in a world that narrows down to the width of their neurological and psychological chemical dependency and seems hopelessly inescapable. But there are forms of drug treatment that are successful and can extract people who seem hopelessly addicted out of the darkness and into the light. Of course addiction recovery is neither easy nor simple and drug and alcohol rehabilitation requires a support network and a facility that understands the challenges and pitfalls of walking away from that great abiding darkness.
