After being described as "Bully Porn" on AICN and a 12 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where one review compared Jared Hess (unfairly) to Rudolf Hess (read a book), FOX Searchlight has decided that it doesn't want to be in Gentlemen Broncos business after all and the only fate for Gentlemen Broncos will be to head to that imaginary land known as Direct to DVD.

Honestly I'm surprised it took this long. Unlike Napoleon Dynamite, Gentlemen Broncos didn't have a genre, and unlike Nacho Libre, it didn't have a star. What it had was an incredibly awkward plot filled out by the usual Something About Mary gags, which every other movie has anyway. The usual plant outlets like AICN praised it to the sky (naturally it's still opening at the Alamo Drafthouse, but few people could stand actually watching it, and Gentlemen Broncos seems to have no other purpose except torture.

The odds are good that Jared Hess will be back, but hopefully he'll learn a few lessons about how to make movies along the way.

Postscript, Armond White naturally loved it.
